Ryan Lara, a 15-year-old boy from Duncanville, Texas, was tragically shot and killed on November 8, 2014, while moving his family's car from the street to the driveway. Ryan, who was undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma, was expected to survive his cancer diagnosis. On that fateful day, he was attacked by assailants attempting to steal the vehicle. Before he died, Ryan told his family that the attackers were trying to steal the truck.
His older brother, Richard, ran outside and began shooting at the fleeing vehicle, unsure if any of his shots hit the car.
The investigation into Ryan's murder led to the arrest of four suspects. Tyler Geraud Wiley, a 19-year-old male, was charged with capital murder and held on a $1 million bond. Wiley confessed not only to Ryan's murder but also to two aggravated robberies in the Dallas area within a few days of the shooting. The other suspects, Torrey Goodson, Jr. and Marcus Rice, both 17, and 19-year-old Kaelan Stephens, were also arrested and charged with capital murder. Goodson was held on a $500,000 bond, while Stephens was held on a $1 million bond. The police were still searching for additional suspects and the vehicle used in the crime, a silver, four-door 2000 model Acura TL with a sunroof.
Ryan's death deeply affected his family and the community. A cross now marks the spot where he was shot, and his funeral service was attended by 400 people. The family expressed their gratitude for the swift progress in the investigation, as they were able to seek answers and justice relatively quickly. Ryan's older brother, Richard, mentioned that the family was overwhelmed but staying strong.
In February 2016, Tyler Wiley pleaded guilty to Ryan's murder and accepted a life sentence. The other three suspects were still awaiting trial at that time. The case highlighted the senseless violence that claimed the life of a young boy who was already battling a serious illness. Ryan's story serves as a reminder of the impact of crime on families and communities, and the importance of seeking justice for victims.
