Humberto Joshua Ramos, a 27-year-old Hispanic male from Midland, Texas, was tragically shot and killed on November 10, 2014. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning in the 500 block of South Carver Street in Midland. Ramos was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during surgery.
Prior to his death, Ramos had met three men—Tysone D. Barker, 23, Michael A. Gomez, 22, and Cruz Gutierrez Jr., 21—at Jaguars Club in Odessa.
The men gave Ramos a ride back to Midland, and shortly after arriving, a confrontation ensued. A witness reported seeing Ramos in a vehicle with the suspects, and one of the men appeared to be covering a gun with a towel. The suspects fled the scene after the shooting.
The three suspects were arrested without incident in Big Spring on first-degree murder charges. They were held in custody on $1 million bonds each. The investigation suggested that the shooting might have been drug-related, as Ramos had an extensive criminal background with at least 16 arrests since 2007. If convicted, the suspects faced five to 99 years in prison.
The case drew significant attention from law enforcement agencies, including the Midland Police Department, U.S. Marshal's Office, Department of Public Safety, and the Big Spring Police Department. The suspects were awaiting extradition back to Midland County to face trial.
Ramos is remembered by his family and friends, who held a funeral service in his honor at Templo Bautista La Hermosa in Midland. His obituary noted that he was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend who will be deeply missed.
