Georgianne Woolum, a 90-year-old woman of Caucasian ethnicity, tragically passed away on December 3, 2014, in Keller, Texas. She and her husband, Joe Woolum, who was also 90 years old, were found dead in their beds at the Whitley Place assisted living center. The couple had been residents at the center since 2013.
The deaths were determined to be the result of a murder-suicide. Joe Woolum, a former World War II Marine veteran, shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. The couple was found holding hands, and it was reported that Joe had a routine of getting up early for coffee, which he did not do on the morning of their deaths.
The investigation revealed that Joe Woolum had been concerned about his ability to care for his wife, who had suffered from two strokes, congestive heart failure, and had most of her colon removed. His daughter mentioned that Joe loved his wife deeply and did not want to be a burden to their family.
The Keller Police Department confirmed that there were no reports of gunshots heard by other residents, and a handgun was found in Joe Woolum's hand. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office later confirmed the cause of death for both Georgianne and Joe Woolum as gunshot wounds.
This tragic incident highlights the emotional and physical toll that caregiving can take on individuals, especially when dealing with terminal illnesses and the fear of not being able to provide adequate care.
