Spencer Paul Golvach, a 25-year-old White male from Spring Branch, Texas, was tragically killed in the early hours of January 31, 2015, in what authorities described as a random act of violence. At approximately 12:56 a.m., while waiting at a red light at the intersection of 18th Street and Mangum Road in Houston, Spencer was shot in the head by Victor Reyes, a 31-year-old undocumented immigrant from Reynosa, Mexico. The bullet entered through the passenger side window of Spencer's white Toyota pickup, striking him fatally.
Spencer was a dedicated musician and entrepreneur. He played bass in the progressive rock band The Dead Revolt, which he formed with his younger brother Dylan and guitarist George Baba. In addition to his musical pursuits, Spencer owned Spencer’s Guitar Shop in Cypress, Texas, and worked full-time at a warehouse to support his business.
Known for his kindness and passion for music, Spencer was deeply loved by his family, friends, and the local music community.
The night of the shooting, Reyes had already wounded another man in Jersey Village and continued his violent spree after killing Spencer. He later shot and killed 28-year-old Juan Garcia during a confrontation on Little York Road. Reyes then engaged in a shootout with a Harris County sheriff’s deputy. After crashing his vehicle, Reyes exited with a firearm and was fatally shot by the deputy when he refused to surrender.
Victor Reyes had a criminal history and had been deported multiple times prior to the shootings. His ability to re-enter the United States despite previous deportations sparked public outcry and debates over immigration enforcement policies. Spencer's father, Dan Golvach, became an outspoken critic of the immigration system, expressing frustration over the lack of information provided by law enforcement agencies regarding the investigation into his son's death.
