Ramone Alviso Esquivel, a 56-year-old man, was tragically shot and killed on April 3, 2018, in the parking lot of his apartment complex at 8404 South Course in Southwest Houston. Esquivel was on his way to work when he was confronted by an unknown male suspect who attempted to forcibly take his personal property. When Esquivel resisted, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot him before fleeing the scene.
The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Elie Ngouelet, was later arrested and charged
with capital murder. According to police reports, Ngouelet showed up with the intention of robbing someone but did not have a specific target in mind. He was captured on surveillance video waiting in the parking lot and then confronted Esquivel as he exited the apartment complex. After a brief physical altercation, Ngouelet shot Esquivel and then turned himself in to the police the following day, confessing to the crime.
Ngouelet was charged in the 232nd State District Court and held in lieu of a $999,999 bond. The investigation involved the use of sketch drawings and surveillance footage to help identify Ngouelet as the perpetrator. The case drew significant attention from local law enforcement and the community, highlighting the dangers of robbery and violent crime in the area.
Esquivel's death was a tragic event that shook the Southwest Houston community, and the swift arrest and charging of Ngouelet provided some measure of justice for the victim and his family.
