Gary Allen Barnhardt, a 20-year-old male, was shot to death on the evening of October 16, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred during what was supposed to be a drug transaction with three teenagers. Instead of buying a small amount of marijuana, the teenagers attempted to steal the drug and shot Barnhardt in the process.
The three teenagers involved in the incident were Michael Aguilar, Emmanuel Herrera, and Charles Robnett, all of whom were 18 years old at the time.
The investigation revealed that the robbery was the motive behind the shooting, and the charges were upgraded to capital murder. Sheriff Javier Salazar commented on the senselessness of the crime, noting that five young lives were ruined over a drug deal.
Charles Robnett was the first of the three to be tried for the murder. During the trial, Michael Aguilar testified against Robnett as part of a plea agreement, admitting his involvement in the robbery in exchange for a reduced sentence. Aguilar's testimony revealed that Robnett aimed his gun at Barnhardt and fired multiple shots, while Emmanuel Herrera also fired several shots into Barnhardt's car.
Robnett was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The state did not seek the death penalty in this case. The other two teenagers, Michael Aguilar and Emmanuel Herrera, were also charged with capital murder.
