Jaylon Ju'Juan Brown-Dial, a 19-year-old African American male from Lubbock, Texas, tragically passed away on August 2, 2015, following a shooting incident that occurred on July 28, 2015. Jaylon was born on October 1, 1995, to Keisa Dial and James Brown in Lubbock, Texas. He was known for his respectful and outgoing nature, and he had aspirations to attend college and positively impact the youth in his community.
On the night of the incident, Jaylon and his 13-year-old brother,
Brashodrick Dial, were at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of Weber Drive, where they were playing video games with friends, including 21-year-old Gregquendrikk Moore. According to Brashodrick, there was no arguing or fighting before the shooting. Moore, who had brought a silver handgun to the apartment, handed it to Jaylon, who was examining it when the gun discharged, striking Jaylon in the head. Jaylon was rushed to University Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries five days later.
Moore admitted to investigators that he had bought the gun and brought it to the apartment to show to Jaylon, intending to sell it to someone else. He also confessed to playing with the gun and posting a video of himself pointing it at the camera on Snapchat. Investigators found a picture on Moore's phone showing him pointing the gun at the camera with his finger on the trigger. Moore was indicted on a manslaughter charge in December 2018, more than three years after the shooting. He faced a second-degree felony charge, which carries a punishment of two to 20 years in prison.
The case highlights the tragic consequences of reckless behavior and the importance of gun safety. Jaylon's death deeply affected his family and the community, who remembered him as a bright and promising young man who had a positive impact on those around him.
