Edward Mays, a 33-year-old man from Stamford, Texas, was tragically shot and killed on January 1, 2022, at the Carriage House Inn and Suites in Lubbock, Texas. Edward, who went by the last name Mays despite a misspelling on his birth certificate, was a father of five and was trying to rebuild his life and reconnect with his children. According to his family, Edward was a kind and loving person who was working hard to improve himself and provide for his family.
The Lubbock Police
Department identified Joseph Sandoval, a 27-year-old man, as the suspect in Edward's murder. Sandoval was also wanted for escaping from federal custody. On January 7, 2022, Sandoval was arrested with the assistance of the Lubbock Police Department, S.W.A.T, negotiators, the Texas Anti-gang Center, and the U.S. Marshal’s office after receiving a tip on Crime Line. Sandoval was later sentenced to 54 months in prison for escaping federal custody.
Edward's family described him as a big-hearted individual who was always open to helping others. His sister, Chelsey Key, mentioned that Edward was like a "big teddy bear" who loved his family deeply. In his last moments, Edward reportedly told a witness trying to help revive him to tell his kids that he loved them and that he was trying to change his life.
The arrest of Sandoval brought some closure to Edward's family, but they emphasized that nothing could bring Edward back and that Sandoval should spend the rest of his life behind bars. Edward's family continues to mourn his loss and remember him for the loving and caring person he was.
