Philip Liberty, a 75-year-old retired IBM executive, was found dead in his home in Austin, Texas, on November 19, 2015. The crime scene was exceptionally gruesome, with Liberty having been shot in his living room before his body was dragged to the garage. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the face.
The investigation initially faced several obstacles, as there were no signs of forced entry or robbery, and no immediate suspects.
However, detectives soon focused on Phillip's friend, Irwin "Ernie" Pentland, after discovering that Pentland had picked up Phillip's grandson from daycare the day before the murder. Pentland had also attempted to cash forged checks totaling around $20,000 in the days leading up to and following the murder.
Pentland was charged with murder and later found guilty of capital murder. He was sentenced to life without parole. The case highlighted the tragic end of a well-respected and kind-hearted gentleman who was deeply involved in his community.
