JonCasey William Rowell, a 29-year-old man, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Monica Loera's death. According to the arrest affidavit, Rowell had been invited to Loera's home by text message. However, he later returned and argued with her about a possible theft. Rowell claimed that he believed Loera had stolen his wallet after he responded to her ad on backpage.com and visited her at her North Austin home. During the trial, Rowell's lawyers argued that he acted in self-defense, alleging that Loera threatened him with a bat when he came back with a loaded gun in search of his wallet, which was later found in his jacket pocket. Despite his claims, Rowell shot Loera from a foot away and fled the scene.
In November 2017, JonCasey Rowell was convicted of Monica Loera's murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison. During the trial, Rowell confessed to shooting Loera but maintained that it was an act of self-defense. The jury, however, did not accept his argument and found him guilty of murder. The sentencing phase of the trial revealed that Rowell had a history of engaging with sex workers and had searched online for ways to get away with murder shortly after the incident.
