Monica Loera, a 43-year-old transgender woman, was tragically shot and killed in front of her home in Austin, Texas, on January 22, 2016. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. local time, and she was taken to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Monica's death marked the first known trans homicide of 2016, following a surge in trans homicides the previous year.
