On January 29, 2016, Christopher Michael Dew, a 29-year-old male of unknown ethnicity, was fatally shot by Irving, Texas police officers. Dew, who had a prior conviction for aggravated robbery in 2007, attempted to rob a check-cashing store on Esters Road in Irving. During the robbery, he took a female employee hostage and walked out to the parking lot with her. When police arrived, they found Dew holding the woman at gunpoint.
Despite officers' orders to drop the weapon, Dew refused and was subsequently shot by the police. The hostage was unharmed.

The investigation concluded that the officers acted in self-defense and in defense of the hostage. No further litigations or murder cases arose from this incident.
