Ledajrick Rajae Cox, an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on May 28, 2017, in Irving, Texas. Cox was fatally shot just hours after celebrating his high school graduation from David W. Carter High School. He had been filling up a female friend's car with gas at a 7-Eleven when a verbal confrontation erupted between his group and another group of individuals.
The situation initially seemed to deescalate, but as both groups were leaving, the suspects in a newer model white sedan pulled alongside Cox's vehicle and opened fire, striking Cox and two others.
Cox was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where he succumbed to his injuries. Two of his friends were also injured, with one suffering non-life-threatening injuries and the other being released from the hospital after treatment. The suspects fled the scene, but police were able to identify 17-year-old Jeremiah Robinson as the shooter. Robinson was arrested and charged with murder. The driver and another person in the car with Robinson were also identified by detectives, though it was not immediately clear if they faced charges.
In February 2022, Jeremiah Robinson was found guilty of Cox's murder and sentenced to 45 years in prison. The case highlighted the devastating impact of senseless violence and the importance of community and family support in the wake of such tragedies. Cox's family and friends held a vigil to honor his memory, and his stepfather urged anyone with information to come forward.
