On March 27, 2016, Felix Antonio Nieves, a 17-year-old Hispanic male from New Braunfels, Texas, was shot and killed inside his home. The incident occurred during a domestic disturbance that began with an argument between Nieves and his 43-year-old mother, Jennifer Coryell. During the altercation, Nieves took a stun gun from his mother and used it on her several times.
His stepfather, George Alexander Coryell, witnessed the disturbance and retrieved a shotgun, ultimately shooting Nieves twice, killing him instantly.
George Coryell was arrested and charged with murder. He was transported to the Guadalupe County Jail, where he remained in custody with bond set at $250,000. The investigation revealed that the shooting was part of a domestic disturbance, and the parties involved knew each other prior to the incident. Two other children, ages 15 and 12, were present in the home at the time and were safely placed by Child Protective Services.
In a subsequent twist, Jennifer Coryell was also charged with murder. She pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter, and both she and George Coryell avoided prison time under plea deals that were criticized as too lenient. George Coryell received 10 years’ probation, a $4,000 fine, and was ordered to undergo substance abuse treatment. Jennifer Coryell received eight years’ probation, a $1,500 fine, and also was ordered into a secure substance abuse treatment program.
The case drew significant attention and criticism, with some arguing that justice was not served for Felix Nieves or his family. The differing accounts from family members and the children present during the incident added complexity to the case. Despite the legal outcomes, the tragic death of Felix Nieves left a lasting impact on his family and the community of New Braunfels.
