On the night of April 17, 2011, the quiet of a late spring evening was shattered at an apartment complex located at 7711 North La Porte Avenue, just north of Columbia, Missouri. Inside one of the units, 27-year-old African American resident Donnell G. Coleman was at home with a 25-year-old woman and a young child, approximately four years of age. The situation turned violent shortly before midnight, between 11:35 p.m.
and 11:40 p.m., when the residence became the target of a sudden and aggressive home invasion.
Multiple individuals forced their way through the front door of the apartment, brandishing firearms. According to reports from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, the intruders confronted Coleman almost immediately upon entering. Witnesses stated that as Coleman attempted to stand up from a couch, the assailants opened fire, striking him in the chest. The attack was swift, and the suspects, described by witnesses as black males, immediately fled the premises following the shooting, reportedly escaping in a dark-colored sedan-style vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find Coleman critically injured but initially still alive.
