Helen Lashawn Fletcher, a 30-year-old woman from Wichita Falls, Texas, tragically lost her life on June 16, 2016. She was found shot to death, and the investigation into her death led to the arrest of Robert Lee Fleeks, a 69-year-old man. Fleeks, who had an on-again, off-again relationship with Helen, told police he fired a warning shot to drive her away.
However, evidence presented during the trial suggested that he shot Helen after they argued and used crack cocaine together.
The case against Fleeks included the discovery of a .45-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, believed to be the weapon used to kill Helen, and a .22 rifle that belonged to Fleeks. During the trial, Fleeks confessed to shooting Helen, and the court found him guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm. Although the murder charge was dismissed to allow separate trials for the firearm offenses, Fleeks received two life sentences for the firearms convictions. The judge took Helen's murder into account during sentencing, and her family felt that justice was served.
Helen's mother, Carolyn Faye Fletcher, and her sister, Donte Fletcher, expressed their gratitude to the prosecutors and the judge for the life sentences handed down to Fleeks. They believed that if Fleeks had not had a gun, Helen would still be with them. The case remains significant in Wichita Falls, and the family continues to remember Helen on the anniversary of her death.
