On September 1, 2016, George Koumbis, a 63-year-old white male and owner of Shooters Depot in Corpus Christi, Texas, was fatally shot during an armed robbery at his gun store. The incident occurred between 8 and 9 p.m. A 38-year-old male employee was also shot and seriously wounded during the attack. The suspects stole firearms and Koumbis's black Mercedes, which was later found abandoned with the stolen weapons inside.
The investigation led to the arrest of four suspects: Truanser Hughes, 19; Filamir Gomez Jr., 20; Jeremiah Jenkins, 28; and Darien Marshall, 22. Hughes was apprehended on an unrelated aggravated robbery charge and later charged with capital murder. Gomez was arrested in San Diego a week after the shooting. Marshall surrendered to police on September 10, 2016. All four suspects faced capital murder charges with bonds set at $1 million each.
In July 2018, Darien Marshall pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison for his role in the armed robbery that resulted in the death of George Koumbis and the severe injury of the store employee.
George Koumbis was known for his work as a weapons manufacturer and was the owner of Shooters Depot. He was described as an intelligent, kind, and honest man, with a passion for designing firearms. His death was a significant loss to his family, friends, and the local community.
