David Trejo-Gonzalez, a 42-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot on September 21, 2016, in Houston, Texas. According to court records, Trejo-Gonzalez was walking in the parking lot when he was approached by a man who demanded money. During the course of the robbery, Trejo-Gonzalez was shot once in the chest, leading to his death at the scene.
The primary suspect in the case
was Chad Holley, who was 22 years old at the time. Holley, who had a history of criminal activity and was previously involved in a high-profile police brutality case in 2010, was identified by an eyewitness as one of the two suspects seen fleeing the scene. The witness claimed to have seen Holley running from the scene and throwing a gun into a dumpster. Holley was subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with Trejo-Gonzalez's death. However, a Harris County grand jury later declined to indict Holley for the crime, citing insufficient evidence.
The case garnered significant attention due to Holley's previous encounters with law enforcement and his involvement in the 2010 police brutality case. Community activist Quanell X, who had supported Holley during the police brutality case, questioned the reliability of the eyewitness and suggested that Holley's court-ordered ankle monitor and GPS tracking could provide evidence of his whereabouts at the time of the murder. In addition to Holley, another individual named Philip Battles was also implicated in the case. Battles, who was later charged with the capital murder of a 4-year-old girl named Ava Castillo, was identified by the same eyewitness as being present at the scene of Trejo-Gonzalez's murder. Battles and Holley were reportedly seen together on the night of the incident, further complicating the investigation.
