Deputy Jesus Jesse Vargas, a 41-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot on January 15, 2025, in Houston, Texas, while attempting to serve a warrant. Vargas, a dedicated law enforcement officer with 17 years of service in the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, was part of the U.S. Marshal's Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. The tragic incident unfolded in a shopping center on Stella Link Road near the I-610 South Loop.
