Isidro Zarate, a 39-year-old man from San Antonio, Texas, was tragically killed on November 25, 2016. Zarate, who was a father of four, was shot in the neck after he intervened to help a woman who was being assaulted by her partner in the parking lot of a Walmart on Vance Jackson Road. Witnesses reported that Zarate drove up to the scene, rolled down his window, and yelled at the attacker to stop.
In response, the attacker, later identified as Teles Mandan Juarez, shot Zarate at close range.
The incident occurred on Black Friday, and Zarate's wife, Lisa Benavides, was inside the store shopping at the time. She recounted how her husband always had a story to tell and was known for his sense of humor. The couple had been married for 22 years, and Zarate's death left a significant void in their family.
Following the shooting, Juarez fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by police with the help of a helicopter chase. He was charged with aggravated assault and retaliation, both felonies, and later faced a murder charge for Zarate's death. In March 2018, Juarez pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Zarate and an additional 20 years for the aggravated assault of another woman who was shot during the incident.
The case drew significant attention due to Zarate's selfless act of bravery and the swift response of law enforcement. The community mourned the loss of Zarate, who was remembered as a loving father and husband. His family continues to honor his memory, and his story serves as a reminder of the impact one individual's actions can have on others.
