She was found dead in a hotel room at the America's Best Value Inn & Suites in Shenandoah, Texas, from a gunshot wound to the head. Initially, the incident was reported as a possible suicide by Ryan Ray Moore, who was present at the scene. However, further investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office revealed that the wound was not self-inflicted, leading to the arrest of Moore and
Brandan Douglas Rains.
Ryan Ray Moore, aged 23 at the time, was charged with first-degree felony murder. He later pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Additionally, Moore received a five-year sentence for tampering with physical evidence and a concurrent 10-year sentence for a previous unrelated home burglary. Brandan Douglas Rains, who was 22 years old, was charged with tampering with physical evidence. Rains' charges were eventually dropped in exchange for his testimony against Moore, but he was placed on probation for a previous felony escape conviction.
Hayley Farr's mother, Ashley Minga, expressed her dissatisfaction with the sentences, wishing Moore had received a life sentence and hoping Rains would have faced more severe consequences. Minga also filed a lawsuit against the motel, accusing it of ignoring signs of sex trafficking and seeking damages for her daughter's death.
Hayley Farr had aspirations of becoming an adolescent counselor, driven by her own challenging experiences growing up. Her untimely death cut short her dreams and left a lasting impact on her family and community.
