Monica Tharpe, a 31-year-old woman from Bruceville, TX, tragically lost her life on May 20, 2017. She was fatally shot by her estranged husband, Kevin Tharpe, 40, in a murder-suicide incident. Monica had recently moved out of their shared home and was planning to file for divorce. According to her mother, Monica wanted to live a full life and had expressed her desire to leave Kevin.
The incident occurred at their residence on I-35 and Woodlawn Rd.
On the morning of the tragedy, the Bruceville-Eddy police received a call about shots being fired around 7:15 am. The situation escalated into a standoff, involving the sheriff’s deputies, SWAT team, bomb truck, and Texas Rangers. After about two hours of failed negotiations, the SWAT team entered the house and discovered the bodies of Monica and Kevin.
Kevin Tharpe had been arrested two days prior to the incident on charges including harassment and criminal mischief, involving Monica as the victim. Despite his arrest, he was able to bond out. The children present in the house at the time were unharmed and taken in by neighbors.
The McLennan County Sheriff described the incident as a domestic dispute that ended in a tragedy. Monica's mother, Katherine Singh, shared that her daughter was full of life and determined to live independently. The community was deeply affected by the loss, and Monica's memorial services were held at the Mighty Wind Worship Center in Waco, TX.
