Karen Sue Marshall, a 56-year-old woman, tragically lost her life on November 5, 2017, in the mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. She was a Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force and had served for over 20 years. Karen was married to Robert Scott Marshall, who also perished in the shooting. The couple had been married for 33 years and shared a love for motorcycle trips and practical jokes.
The shooter, identified as Devin Patrick Kelley,
had a history of domestic violence and had been court-martialed by the U.S. Air Force for assaulting his wife and fracturing his stepson's skull. Despite this, Kelley was able to purchase firearms due to a failure in the background check system. On the day of the shooting, Kelley opened fire during the church service, killing 26 people, including Karen Sue Marshall, and injuring 20 others.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Kelley fled the scene but was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident led to numerous lawsuits and investigations, including a $144 million settlement announced by the Justice Department in April 2023 to compensate the victims and their families.
The Sutherland Springs shooting remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in Texas history, and the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event.
