On December 21, 2017, six-year-old Kameron Prescott, a young boy from Schertz, Texas, tragically lost his life due to a deputy-involved shooting. Kameron was inside his family's mobile home when Bexar County sheriff's deputies were pursuing a suspect, Amanda Jones, who was wanted on charges of car theft and fraud. During the pursuit, deputies fired multiple rounds at Jones, and one of the bullets penetrated the wall of Kameron's trailer, striking him in the abdomen.
Despite immediate medical attention, Kameron succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The incident occurred in the Pecan Grove Mobile Home Park, where Kameron's family lived. Sheriff Javier Salazar described the shooting as a "tragic accident" and stated that the deputies believed Jones was armed, although no gun was found at the scene. Investigators later discovered a dark tube with Jones' blood on it, which deputies may have mistaken for a firearm.
In the aftermath of Kameron's death, his family filed a lawsuit against Bexar County, Sheriff Javier Salazar, and the deputies involved in the shooting. In late 2019, the Prescott family reached a settlement with Bexar County, receiving $4.5 million in compensation for their loss. Additionally, $500,000 was awarded to the mother of Amanda Jones.
Despite the settlement, no criminal charges were brought against the deputies involved in the shooting. A grand jury concluded that criminal charges were not appropriate, and the deputies were not held criminally responsible for Kameron's death.
