NeQuacia Jacobs, an 18-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on February 24, 2018, in Dallas, Texas. On that fateful day, NeQuacia and her 16-year-old sister were inside their second-floor apartment at the Highland Hills Apartments in southeast Oak Cliff. Around 2:00 p.m., they heard a disturbance outside and went to their window to investigate. At that moment, a man they did not know fired shots at them from the lower level.
NeQuacia was struck in the torso and succumbed to her injuries, while her sister was shot in the back but survived.
The Dallas Police Department launched an investigation into the murder of NeQuacia Jacobs. Surveillance footage captured a white Dodge Charger with tinted windows arriving at the apartment complex, and a man in a black hoodie with writing on the back was seen shooting into the window of the apartment. The police connected the suspect, Jeremy Lamont Warren, to the scene through his car, which was identified in the surveillance video. Warren, a 19-year-old African American male, was already in custody for unrelated charges when the arrest warrant for NeQuacia's murder was issued. His bail was set at $150,000.
Witnesses and neighbors recalled the horrific scene, describing the sound of gunshots and the desperate cries for help from the girls' siblings. NeQuacia's family and friends were devastated by her sudden and tragic death. She was remembered as a kind, loving person who was always smiling and goofy. NeQuacia was a senior at South Oak Cliff High School, preparing to graduate in May, and she worked an after-school job to help support her family.
The case gained attention when it was featured on FOX 4's weekly profile of unsolved crimes called Trackdown. A witness who saw the case on the show identified Warren as the suspect through a photo lineup. Warren faced charges for NeQuacia's murder, as well as for violating probation for previous cases of robbery and aggravated robbery. The police did not believe that NeQuacia and her sister were the intended targets of the shooting.
NeQuacia Jacobs' death left a lasting impact on her community, and her family continued to mourn her loss. The investigation and subsequent arrest of Jeremy Lamont Warren brought some measure of justice, but the pain of losing NeQuacia remained with those who knew and loved her.
