He had met his girlfriend while riding a city bus, where his singing caught her attention, leading to a relationship that had recently seen them move into an apartment together.
The events leading to his death unfolded around 10:30 p.m. when Johnson and his girlfriend stepped outside the home where they had been visiting her relatives for dinner. While outside, they were approached by a young man who asked for a lighter. Johnson replied that he did not have one but then asked the stranger if he knew anything about recent car prowlers in the neighborhood, as he had noticed suspicious activity around his girlfriend's stepmother's vehicle. The question appeared to agitate the man, who produced a pistol and instructed two nearby children to run before opening fire.
