On the day of his death, Phillip and an 8-year-old girl named Sarah Wolfe were found fatally shot in their home. The shooter, identified as 38-year-old Cimarron Wolfe, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities determined that this was an apparent murder-suicide. Cimarron Wolfe was the father of Sarah Wolfe and possibly the stepfather of Phillip Bernal.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident and concluded that it was a case of family violence. Cimarron Wolfe had a history of criminal charges, including theft, evading arrest, and burglary. The investigation revealed that the children's grandmother had left the house to run an errand, and upon returning, discovered the tragic scene.
