On the evening of June 24, 2013, 27-year-old Black male Carlton L. Lewis was standing in the parking lot of the Sycamore Groves Apartments in Kansas City, Missouri. It was around 9:15 p.m. when a vehicle containing two women entered the complex at 1711 Kansas Avenue. The women, who were visitors to the area, had taken a wrong turn after stopping at a nearby liquor store and had become lost. They spotted Lewis and another man in the parking lot and paused to ask for directions. As the men stood outside the visitors' car assisting them, a gunman approached on foot and suddenly opened fire on the group.
The shooting unleashed a chaotic scene as bullets struck the vehicle and the bystanders. Lewis was fatally wounded during the ambush and died at the scene. The second man standing with him was critically injured but survived the attack. The two women inside the car also sustained injuries; the driver was struck in the arm, and the passenger was hit in the neck. despite their wounds, the driver managed to speed away from the gunfire, eventually stopping at a McDonald's parking lot near 14th Street and Prospect Avenue to summon help. Both women were treated and were expected to survive the ordeal.
Detectives from the Kansas City Police Department arrived to investigate the homicide, describing the women as innocent bystanders who had merely stopped for assistance. At the time of the incident, authorities stated they had no motive for the shooting and no suspect information to release to the public. The investigation struggled to identify the gunman who had fired upon the group, and initial reports indicated that no arrests were immediately made in connection with Lewis's death.
Prior to his untimely death, Lewis had been serving a probation sentence for a tragic incident that occurred in 2009. He had pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter regarding a drunk driving crash that resulted in the deaths of his mother, Crystal S. Lewis, and his girlfriend, Melinda N. Reliford. In that earlier event, Lewis's vehicle had collided with a fire truck in the early morning hours, an accident for which he was sentenced to four years of probation. His death in the apartment parking lot marked a violent end to a life already touched by significant tragedy.
