On November 12, 2018, Abram Garcia IV, a 20-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot by a 15-year-old suspect outside an apartment complex in the 700 block of Drury Lane in San Antonio, Texas. Garcia and his girlfriend were getting into their vehicle to leave when the suspect approached Garcia, who was sitting in the passenger seat, and opened fire.
Garcia was shot three times and despite his girlfriend's attempt to rush him to a hospital, he was pronounced dead at a nearby motel.
The suspect, later identified as Raul Ignacio Cervera, was arrested at the scene and charged with Garcia's death. Initially, the case was charged as murder, but it was later upgraded to capital murder as Garcia was killed during the course of a robbery. Cervera was certified to stand trial as an adult in April 2019, despite arguments from the defense about his troubled upbringing and mental health issues.
In April 2022, Cervera, now 20 years old, pleaded no contest to murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Garcia. The court proceedings revealed that Cervera had intended to buy marijuana from Garcia and his girlfriend but instead demanded all the drugs and shot Garcia during the robbery attempt.
Garcia was remembered by friends and family as a hardworking and kind individual who always tried to help others. His death deeply affected those who knew him, and a GoFundMe was created in his honor to support his family.
