reported that Sonny was shot outside his home, but his family clarified that he was inside when he was shot through a window. His mother, Christine Vidales, stated that she believes her son was targeted by someone who approached his bedroom window. Sonny came out of his room and collapsed in front of his 3-year-old sister, and despite emergency medical personnel's efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Sonny's death revealed that he was in the process of selling a stolen gun when he was shot. Alonzo Cantu, a 19-year-old, was arrested on suspicion of shooting Sonny to death. Detectives believe that Cantu had arranged to buy the stolen gun from Sonny, and after receiving the item, he allegedly shot him. Cantu was charged with murder in connection to Sonny's death.
