Her death was part of a devastating double murder-suicide incident that also claimed the lives of her estranged husband, Rosalio Mendoza, and her sister-in-law, Nancy Castillo. On the night of the incident, Nancy Castillo called 911 to report that Rosalio Mendoza was arguing with Vanessa outside the house and that he had a gun. Officers arrived at the scene within minutes of the call. They found Vanessa Mendoza dead with a gunshot wound outside the back patio door. Inside the house, they discovered Rosalio Mendoza dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a bedroom, and Nancy Castillo lying in the front yard with gunshot wounds.
Police believe that Rosalio Mendoza forced his way into the house through the back door and shot Vanessa Mendoza before moving to the bedroom where Nancy Castillo was helping her three nieces escape through a window. Rosalio then shot Nancy Castillo and subsequently took his own life. The three children were safely taken into the care of other family members following the incident.
The Corsicana Police Department conducted a thorough investigation into the incident, but no additional suspects were identified. The case was treated as a murder-suicide, and no further litigation or arrests were made in connection with Vanessa Mendoza's death.
