Carlos Arajeni-Arriaza Morillo, a 24-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost his life on August 3, 2019, in Grand Prairie, Texas. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when Morillo and another individual, Cristian Lobos, 18, were lured to the 300 block of Northeast 5th Street by two teenagers, Jesse Martinez, 18, and Philip Aguilera Baldenegro, 19. The teenagers intended to rob them.
During the robbery, a physical altercation broke out, and Morillo was shot in the torso.
He was immediately taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Lobos sustained minor injuries but survived the attack. The suspects, Martinez and Baldenegro, fled the scene but were later apprehended by the Grand Prairie Police Department.
Both Martinez and Baldenegro were charged with aggravated robbery and capital murder. The case drew significant attention due to the involvement of Zephaniah Trevino, a 16-year-old girl who was also charged with capital murder. Trevino's defense argued that she was a victim of sex trafficking by Baldenegro and was coerced into participating in the crime. Advocates for Trevino claimed that she was forced to perform sex acts on the victims as part of a pattern of abuse.
The legal proceedings for the case have been complex, with Trevino's case being highlighted in the podcast "Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom," which brought attention to her claims of being a trafficking victim. Despite the defense's arguments, the prosecution sought to try Trevino as an adult.
