Mark Calvin, a 20-year-old Black man, tragically lost his life on October 6, 2019, in Houston, Texas. He was fatally shot at the 5800 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard. Mark was known for his outgoing and caring nature, and he was an inspirational figure in his community. He had plans to attend Jarvis Christian College in the spring and was actively involved as a youth leader at his church. His father described him as a "trailblazer of inspiration" and highlighted the impact Mark had on others, even after his death, as his donated organs saved five local lives.
The investigation into Mark Calvin's death led to the arrest of four suspects. Damond Terrell Diggs, a 20-year-old Black man, was charged with murder for his alleged role in the shooting. Demetrick Reese Rogers, also a 20-year-old Black man, faced similar charges. Keionta Mitchell, another 20-year-old Black man, was charged with felony deadly conduct for discharging a firearm. Additionally, a 16-year-old juvenile male was charged with felony deadly conduct and referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities.
The incident occurred when a group of armed individuals fired shots into a crowded parking lot, resulting in Mark's death and the injury of a 20-year-old woman named Brooklyn Rouse, who was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head but survived. The suspects were identified through further investigation, and they were subsequently taken into custody and charged for their roles in the shooting.
