On September 4, 2023, 12-year-old Frederick "Fred" Johnson Jr. was fatally shot in Houston's Sunnyside neighborhood. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the 4100 block of Barberry Drive near Scott Street. Fred was walking home with friends when they encountered 18-year-old Kahlis Willis. An argument ensued, escalating rapidly, and Willis allegedly drew a firearm, shooting Fred multiple times before fleeing the scene. Fred was pronounced dead at the location.
Witnesses reported that there had been prior tension between Fred and Willis. One of Fred's friends, present during the shooting, recounted that Willis had previously stayed with Fred's family after being evicted from his apartment. The friend expressed disbelief over the shooting, stating, "You shot and killed that boy for no reason." He also mentioned that the final bullet was intended for him but missed.
Following the incident, Houston police launched a search for Willis. He was apprehended without incident on September 5, 2023, and charged with capital murder in connection with Fred's death. The arrest brought some relief to the grieving community, though the tragic loss of a young life continued to resonate deeply among family members and neighbors.
Fred's passing was a significant blow to the Sunnyside community, where he was known as a friendly and good-natured child. Community members, including local coaches, emphasized the need for more resources and support for youth in the area to prevent such tragedies. A memorial service for Fred was held on September 23, 2023, at Greater Cathedral of Faith Church in Houston, followed by his interment at Houston Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Pearland, Texas.
