On May 14, 2014, 41-year-old Jeronnia Dwyane Graves was involved in a fatal altercation inside the St. Louis Public Library. The incident occurred during the afternoon hours at the library's downtown branch, a location frequented by many in the community. Graves became engaged in a heated dispute with another library patron, later identified as Calvin Guiden.
The confrontation, which investigators determined stemmed from an argument over Guiden’s ex-girlfriend, escalated quickly within the public space. Guiden produced a weapon and stabbed Graves during the altercation. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but the injuries proved fatal, and Graves died as a result of the stabbing.
Police arrested Calvin Guiden in connection with the attack. Following an investigation by St. Louis authorities, Guiden was charged and subsequently prosecuted for the death of Graves. In the legal proceedings that followed, Guiden was found guilty of the charges related to the stabbing, bringing a conclusion to the criminal case surrounding the violent midday encounter at the library.
