Christopher Charles Lewis Brewster, a 32-year-old male police sergeant from Houston, Texas, tragically lost his life on December 7, 2019. Brewster was responding to a domestic assault call when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. when a woman reported that her boyfriend had assaulted her and was armed with two firearms. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that both individuals had already left.
Sergeant Brewster, while checking the area, encountered the couple walking in the 7400 block of Avenue L. As he approached the female, she pointed towards the suspect, Arturo Solis. Solis immediately opened fire, striking Sergeant Brewster multiple times. Despite being critically injured, Brewster managed to provide dispatchers and other officers with a description of his wounds and the suspect's direction of travel. He was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Arturo Solis, the suspect, fled the scene but was apprehended after an extensive search. He was subsequently charged with capital murder. Solis had a history of violence, including a 2015 conviction for assaulting a woman with whom he shared a daughter. In December 2021, Solis was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the impact of domestic violence on communities.
Sergeant Brewster had served with the Houston Police Department for nine years and was known for his dedication and strong character. He was promoted to sergeant in February 2019 and was assigned to the Eastside Patrol Division. Brewster was also pursuing a master's degree at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Bethany Elise Brewster, his parents, and three sisters. The community mourned the loss of a dedicated officer who was committed to serving and protecting others.
