Joshua Gomez, a 37-year-old man from Lubbock, Texas, tragically passed away on January 3, 2020. He was born on June 1, 1982, and lived his entire life in Lubbock. Joshua was known for his fun-loving personality and was deeply loved by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Moni Gomez, and his three daughters, Jazlyn Khali Caballero, Aveyona Solei Gomez, and Georgia P.
Starr Gomez, as well as his parents, Manuel and Ermalinda Gomez, and his sister, Crystal Gomez.
Joshua Gomez's death occurred at the Hotel Ava in Lubbock, where he was found with a gunshot wound in the lobby. He was able to tell the police that he believed the shooter was in a black BMW and that the passenger was the one who shot him. Based on his statements, the police identified Gilbert Cardona III as the suspect. Cardona was later arrested and admitted to shooting Gomez after claiming he saw a gun on Gomez's waistband.
The case faced several challenges, including Cardona being in federal custody and moved to another location, which made it difficult for local prosecutors to proceed. After years of investigation and discussions with the victim's family, a plea agreement was reached. Cardona pleaded guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, which he will serve after completing his federal sentence. The murder charge against him was dropped as part of the plea deal.
