Elvi Vanessa Cervantes-De La Torre, a 38-year-old Hispanic woman, tragically lost her life on February 17, 2020, in Austin, Texas. She was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Canyon Trail Apartments on Grand Canyon Drive. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when a group of approximately eight to ten Hispanic males were drinking in the parking lot. An altercation broke out between two of the men and Cervantes-De La Torre.
The situation escalated when one of the men returned with a handgun and fired multiple shots at Cervantes-De La Torre, who was in her SUV. Her male companion, who was also in the vehicle, was shot in the leg but survived and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The suspects fled the scene in a maroon pick-up truck and a black sedan.
Following the incident, the Austin Police Department issued a warrant for Pedro Fuentes Espinoza, a 42-year-old Hispanic man, charging him with first-degree felony murder. An eyewitness identified Espinoza as the shooter, and he was known to be an acquaintance of Cervantes-De La Torre. The investigation revealed that Espinoza became agitated when a black truck parked nearby started playing music, which led to the confrontation.
The case remains under investigation, and the Austin Police Department continues to search for additional suspects involved in the shooting. Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
