The incident occurred in the 900 block of Ripford Street, where an argument over money escalated into violence. During the altercation, Richard Rodriguez was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene. A passerby, another man in his 40s, was struck by a stray bullet and transported to Brook Army Medical Center in serious condition.
Following the incident, authorities sought information from the public to identify those involved. On August 14, 2020, 57-year-old Benjamin Luna was arrested and charged with murder in connection to the case. According to an affidavit, Luna was present during the shooting but was not the gunman. Witnesses reported that a masked individual shot Richard Rodriguez after an initial attempt to fire a weapon failed. Luna allegedly left the scene with the shooter and other individuals. He was subsequently arrested and held on a $250,000 bond.
Richard Torres Rodriguez was born on August 27, 1971, in San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Rodriguez; his son, John Raymond Rodriguez; his grandparents, Virginia and Ynes Torres; his brother, Robin Rodriguez; and his niece, Dominik Rodriguez. He is survived by his children: Renee Nicole Rodriguez, Rikki Nicole Rodriguez, Richard Rey Rodriguez Jr., Rodrigo Javier Rodriguez, and Ronni Raelynn Rodriguez; his mother, Hilaria T. Rodriguez; his sisters: Irma Montoya, Diana Garcia, Estelle Martin, and Hilaria Mireles; his brothers: Raymond Rodriguez Jr., Robert Rodriguez, and Rene Rodriguez; and two grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The arrest of Benjamin Luna provided some closure to the tragic event that led to the death of Richard Rodriguez. The investigation highlighted the dangers of disputes escalating into violence and underscored the importance of community cooperation in bringing suspects to justice.
