Jeffery "Baby J" Taylor, a 7-year-old Black boy from San Antonio, Texas, tragically died on December 21, 2019. His parents, Jermaine and LaKeisha Chaney, believe that their son's death was a result of relentless bullying at school. Jeffery was the only Black student in his class at Salado Elementary School, and he was subjected to racial slurs such as the "N-word," "Blacky," and "snaggletooth."
His classmates also destroyed his shoes and boots, further isolating him.
On December 20, 2019, Jeffery came home from school visibly upset and told his mother that he did not want to go back to school. The next morning, his parents found him dead in his bedroom with a gun that belonged to the family. San Antonio police ruled his death as an accident, but his parents insist that it was a suicide driven by the bullying he endured.
Despite the Chaneys' claims, the East Central Independent School District conducted investigations at multiple levels but did not find evidence to support the allegations of bullying. The lack of clarity and closure has left Jeffery's parents in a state of grief and uncertainty.
