Kimberly Robinson was a 28-year-old Black woman and a mother of five living in Houston, Texas. Her life was cut short in a violent intrusion into her home.
In the early morning of Friday, July 17, 2020, Ms. Robinson was asleep in her bed with her 4-year-old daughter in their apartment in the 1800 block of Barker Cypress Road. Around 4:15 a.m., her ex-boyfriend, 24-year-old Cedgadrick Ardarius Harris, kicked in the front door. Police said Harris went to the bedroom and shot Ms.
Robinson multiple times as she lay in bed. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms. Robinson’s 4-year-old daughter was struck at least once in the face by a bullet or shrapnel during the attack. She was rushed to Texas Children's Hospital, where she was conscious and breathing and expected to survive her injuries. Four other children, all under the age of 10, were downstairs in the apartment at the time of the shooting. They were not physically harmed. After the shooting, the 10-year-old child called relatives for help. All the children were placed in the care of family members.
Investigators identified Harris as the suspect, and relatives called him “a monster.” Court records showed a history of domestic violence. Ms. Robinson had pressed an assault charge against Harris in November 2019, and a protective order was issued. Harris was released on bond for that charge. He was later granted another bond for the same offense in April 2020 and was also released from jail in May 2020 after an arrest on an unrelated charge.
After fleeing the scene of the shooting, Harris was charged with capital murder on Monday, July 20, 2020. He surrendered to authorities that same evening. As of July 2020, his case was entering the court system.
