The suspect in the case, Darius Francis, a 26-year-old African American man, was arrested without incident shortly after the shooting. He was charged with manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and felon in possession of a weapon. Witnesses reported seeing Francis holding a handgun during the altercation, and the gun was fired once, striking both Tawana and another male victim, Tremond Jones, who survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Houston Police Department's Homicide Division, led by Sergeant C. Duncan and Detective J. Escobar, conducted the investigation. The case was brought before the 209th State District Court, where Francis faced the charges related to the fatal shooting.
