Lemuel "D.J." Bruce, a 44-year-old male, was a dedicated arson investigator for the Houston Fire Department and a former U.S. Marine Corps crew chief. On October 16, 2020, Bruce was shot and killed in the line of duty while investigating a series of arson fires in Houston's Timbergrove and Heights neighborhoods. Bruce was following a suspect's vehicle when an exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in Bruce being shot multiple times. He was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
