Lemuel "D.J." Bruce, a 44-year-old male, was a dedicated arson investigator for the Houston Fire Department and a former U.S. Marine Corps crew chief. On October 16, 2020, Bruce was shot and killed in the line of duty while investigating a series of arson fires in Houston's Timbergrove and Heights neighborhoods. Bruce was following a suspect's vehicle when an exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in Bruce being shot multiple times.
He was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Joshua De La Cerda, was found dead at the scene with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. De La Cerda had no prior criminal record and was a recent graduate of Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law, with plans to start a job as a human rights lawyer. The incident was investigated by the Houston Police Department as an officer-involved shooting.
Bruce's death marked the first time an HFD arson investigator was killed in the line of duty. He was survived by his wife Rachel and two children, aged 12 and 8.
