On the morning of July 29, 2026, the Chicago basketball community was shaken by the tragic death of Timothy Bankston, a 60-year-old beloved coach and former high school basketball star. Bankston was discovered inside a residence in Chicago's Auburn Gresham neighborhood, located on the 7600 block of South Emerald Avenue. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen and was pronounced dead at the scene. The home where he was found belonged to a friend, who made the devastating discovery upon returning to the property and finding the back door ajar. Family members believe the shooting likely occurred the night before he was found.

Timothy Bankston was a celebrated figure in Chicago sports, remembered for his leadership as a point guard on the 1984 Simeon Career Academy team that won a state championship. That legendary team was also marked by tragedy with the murder of his teammate, Ben Wilson, a story later chronicled in an ESPN documentary that featured Bankston. After his playing career, which included time at Bradley University and Loyola University Chicago, Bankston dedicated his life to mentoring young athletes. Since 2002, he had been the head basketball coach at Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City, where he also worked as a special education teacher's aide. His profound impact on his players and the community was widely acknowledged, earning him a place in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

In the wake of his death, Chicago police launched a homicide investigation, recovering a single shell casing from the basement of the home. However, as of early August 2026, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and authorities had not publicly identified any suspects or a potential motive for the crime. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of this revered coach and mentor remains ongoing. The lack of resolution in the case has left his family, friends, and the numerous lives he touched throughout his career searching for answers and justice for a man who gave so much to his community.
