Sergeant Sean Sebastian Rios, aged 47, was a dedicated officer with the Houston Police Department, having served for 25 years. On November 9, 2020, while en route to start his shift at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, he encountered two vehicles and an armed man on the roadway. This led to a shootout in the 7700 block of the North Freeway, where Sergeant Rios was fatally wounded.
Despite making it to the nearby Taj Inn & Suites, he succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, identified as Robert Soliz, was arrested the following day during a traffic stop on the Katy Freeway. Soliz, who was 24 years old at the time, claimed the shooting was in self-defense. The case went to trial, and on November 15, 2022, Soliz was found not guilty of murder. The jury's decision was based on the argument that there was insufficient evidence to prove that Soliz did not act in self-defense.
The tragic incident left behind Sergeant Rios's four children, aged 17, 14, 12, and 9, as well as his parents, brother, and two cousins who also serve with the Houston Police Department. The community and the Houston Police Department honored his memory, with Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaiming November 18 as Sgt. Sean Sebastian Rios Day in Houston.
Despite the not guilty verdict, Soliz remains in jail facing other charges, including drug and aggravated assault charges from previous incidents. The case continues to be a point of contention, with the Houston Police Officer's Union expressing disappointment and concern for the family's well-being.
Sergeant Rios's legacy as a Marine Corps veteran and a dedicated police officer is remembered by his colleagues and the community he served. His commitment to public safety and his ultimate sacrifice are honored by those who knew him and continue to work in law enforcement.
