Rodney Dent II, a 25-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on December 4, 2020, in Ennis, Texas. Dent, along with Caleb Clark, 23, was shot multiple times while sitting in a parked car in front of their grandmother's home. The incident was a result of a drive-by shooting, where the assailants fired multiple rounds into the vehicle, causing both men to sustain fatal injuries.
Dent and Clark were each struck by thirteen bullets, leading to their immediate deaths.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed that Dontriel Perry, a 24-year-old male, was the primary suspect in the case. Perry, along with another individual, was seen loading firearms and expressing anger towards Clark, who had recently started dating Perry's ex-girlfriend. This relationship caused a significant rift between Perry and Clark, who had previously been friends. On the day of the shooting, witnesses observed Perry driving by the house and angrily shouting out of the passenger window of a white SUV.
Following a thorough investigation by the Ennis Police Department, Waxahachie Police Department, and the Texas Rangers, Perry was arrested and charged with capital murder. The case was brought to trial in the 443rd District Court in Waxahachie, Texas. During the trial, evidence was presented that linked Perry to the crime, including his admission of handling a firearm of the same caliber used in the shooting and his presence in the SUV at the time of the incident.
On June 23, 2023, Perry was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The conviction was a result of the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies and the Ellis County District Attorney's Office. The verdict provided some measure of justice for the families of Rodney Dent II and Caleb Clark, who continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones.
