On February 26, 2021, 6-year-old Qualal Terrion Young, a young boy from Denver, tragically died from a gunshot wound at a home in central El Paso, Texas. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. when police officers responded to a shooting at 1925 Detroit Avenue. Qualal was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after being discovered with the gunshot wound.
The investigation revealed that Qualal's father and uncle were outside the home at the time of the shooting, while Qualal's 13-year-old
brother was inside with him. Detectives have been working to determine the level of involvement of the older brother in the incident.
Qualal's uncle, 46-year-old Xavier Deon Ford, who is also from Denver, was charged with making a firearm accessible to a child. Ford was not in custody at the time of the charges and was expected to be booked at a later date. The charges suggested that Ford left the gun where the children could find it, but the police did not provide detailed information on how the shooting occurred.
The case remains under investigation by the Crimes Against Persons Unit, and detectives continue to work on determining the full circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Qualal Terrion Young.
