Oscar Lavant Payton, a 56-year-old male from Fort Worth, Texas, tragically lost his life on April 30, 2021. Payton was shot in the back of his head and his body was subsequently dragged out of a car and left on the side of a road in a desolate area of west Fort Worth. The incident was discovered when a passerby noticed the body and called 911.
Carlus Qualls, a 52-year-old man, was identified as the primary suspect in Payton's death.
Initially, Qualls claimed that another individual in the backseat of his car had shot Payton and forced him to move the body. However, video evidence obtained by detectives showed that there was no one else in the car at the time. Qualls later admitted to dragging Payton's body out of the car and leaving it on the roadside.
Following the investigation, Qualls was arrested and charged with murder. He eventually pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to life in prison. The Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, and a jury decided Qualls' sentence in a district court.
