Humphrey Magwira, a 20-year-old male student at the University of Houston, tragically lost his life on October 15, 2021, in Houston, Texas. Magwira, who was of Tanzanian descent, was involved in a minor car accident near Beechnut and Addicks Clodine Road in Fort Bend County. The accident occurred when Magwira's vehicle collided with another car. Within seconds of the crash, the driver of the other vehicle, identified as 19-year-old Ramon Vasquez, exited his car and shot Magwira multiple times.
Magwira was less than a mile away from his home and was on his way to get a haircut when the incident occurred. He was flown to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Magwira's family, who had moved to Houston from Tanzania about eight years prior, was devastated by the loss. His mother, Josephine Kuyangana, and father, Exuperius Magwira, described him as a bright and hardworking individual who loved playing soccer and was studying computer engineering at the University of Houston. Magwira was also working a part-time internship in computer science. His family had high hopes for his future and were heartbroken by the senseless act of violence that took his life.
Ramon Vasquez, the suspect in the shooting, was arrested and charged with murder. He was held in the Fort Bend County Jail on a $500,000 bond. The incident was initially believed to be a case of road rage, but investigators later clarified that it was not. The entire incident, captured on doorbell video, showed Magwira's car T-boning Vasquez's vehicle at the intersection. Vasquez then stepped out of his car, fired six shots at Magwira, and sped off. The shooting, which lasted less than 20 seconds, shocked the local community and led to calls for an end to gun violence and road rage incidents.
Magwira's family created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to bring his remains back to Tanzania for his memorial services. They also called for an end to gun violence, emphasizing that everyone deserves to live and that their son should not have died in such a senseless manner. The case against Vasquez is ongoing, with the family and community seeking justice for the tragic loss of Humphrey Magwira.
