Christy Martinez, a 27-year-old Hispanic woman from Harlingen, Texas, was reported missing by her family on November 23, 2021, just before the Thanksgiving holiday. An intensive search began for her, involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Eleven days later, on December 4, 2021, authorities following up on leads discovered her body in a remote location off Jimenez Road in rural Cameron County. The discovery was made by a team of Harlingen police, Texas Rangers, and U.S.
Marshals.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect. Police arrested Isaac Vasquez, a 21-year-old man from the nearby city of San Benito, and charged him with murder and tampering with evidence. His bond was set at $1 million for the murder charge and an additional $100,000 for the tampering charge.
On March 9, 2022, a Cameron County grand jury indicted Vasquez on both charges. The indictment specified that on November 24, 2021, the day after she was reported missing, Vasquez did “intentionally or knowingly cause the death of an individual, namely, Christy Martinez, by shooting the said Christy Martinez with a firearm.” He was also formally charged with tampering with physical evidence for his attempts to impair her body to prevent its use in the investigation.
Following the indictment, the case proceeded to trial. Isaac Vasquez was convicted of murder for killing Christy Martinez. He was subsequently sentenced to serve 40 years in prison.
