De'Angelo Devon "Dee" Handy, an 18-year-old male of African American ethnicity from Texarkana, Texas, tragically lost his life on December 13, 2021. He was a student at Premier High School and worked as a stocker at Rehkopf’s Food Store. Dee was known for his love of sports, fashion, and spending time with family. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, and grandson.
On the day of his death, Dee was fatally shot at a house in the 1900 block of W. 13th St. in Texarkana, Texas.
The incident also resulted in the death of another 18-year-old, Rickalon Young, and injured a 17-year-old who survived. The suspect, Kevonte Collins, an 18-year-old male, was identified and arrested for the crime. Collins was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years due to his age at the time of the crime.
The investigation revealed that Collins believed he had been set up to be robbed by Handy, Young, and the injured 17-year-old. Collins was seen running from the house with a long gun and an extended magazine, which led to his quick identification as a suspect. He was arrested in DeSoto, Texas, on May 1, 2022, and has been in custody since.
The case brought significant attention to the community, and the trial concluded with Collins receiving a life sentence. The families of the victims have been deeply affected by the loss, and the community continues to remember and honor the lives of De'Angelo Handy and Rickalon Young.
